The indoor season is starting to wind down. The biggest meets of the year here in Colorado have wrapped up, but there's still indoor action yet to be contested.
In a little less than two weeks, of course, are the Simplot Games in Pocatello, Idaho. For the largest share of Colorado indoor athletes, that marks the end of the indoor season.
Several Colorado athletes, however, will be foregoing the trip to Idaho and marking the ends of their indoor seasons this weekend. And, there are two options this weekend for ending your season (or, for some, sharpening for Simplot).
At Steinhauer Field House in Golden on Saturday--Valentine's Day--is the Colorado School of Mines High School Indoor Open. If you haven't been to Mines this year, you are missing seeing the remodeled field house. Quarters are still tight and all, but the remodeling leaves the place with a decidedly more up-to-date feel.
Several clubs are already on the registration list, including Angel Flight, FK Elite, REAL Training, and No Limits. Unattached entries, of course, are also being taken. This one figures to be a solid meet. I'll post a link to start lists when those become available.
Alternately, and a little closer for a lot of southern Colorado competitors, there is the Great Southwest Indoor Classic in Albuquerque on Sunday.
This Sunday will be the final opportunity this winter for high schoolers to take to the banked Mondo oval at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Following a couple more indoor championship meets over the next couple of weeks, the track will be dismantled and put into storage until next January.
The Great Southwest Indoor Classic has already landed some top-tier entries out of Texas and New Mexico and should be picking up several more entries over the next few days. So, those Colorado athletes making the trip down will be facing some stiff competition.
As a sidebar and public service kind of announcement, if you're going down to Albuquerque for the Great Southwest Indoor, be sure to save your dining excursion to Sadie's of New Mexico until after your race is over.
