Although Mesa Ridge did not dominate as a team at the Sand Creek Scorpion Invitational, the Grizzlies certainly left a mark on the men's jumping events. Mesa Ridge made it a clean sweep of the jumping events with Thomas Gipson taking the high jump at 6-2, Marcel Gibbons winning the long jump at 21-6.5, and Gibbons again winning the triple jump at 45-0.
Adding to the Grizzlies' domination of the jumping events were teammates Mykal Torres, who claimed second in both the long and triple jumps, and Zach Little, who was third in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump.
Team titles at the Scorpion Invitational went to Falcon on the men's side and The Classical Academy on the women's side. Falcon scored points in every track event, including first places by Keenen Ballage at 100 and 200 meters, Bryce Lane in the 110 hurdles, Kevin Johnson at 1600 meters, Wes Rickman at 3200 meters, and the 4 X 800 meter relay team. Times in the short sprint and hurdle events were hampered somewhat by persistent light to moderate headwinds on the finish straight.
Second place in the men's team standings went to Sierra High School who was running a limited squad--perhaps with an eye toward Saturday's Foot of the Rockies meet in Fort Collins. State champion hurdler Kelby Dias competed only in the long jump on Friday night. Despite Dias's limited participation, the Stallions still managed victories by the 4 X 100 relay and Corey Breeden at 400 meters.
On the women's side, it was a red-letter day for several 3A schools and athletes. Despite competing in a meet composed primarily of 4A programs, several 3A athletes and relays won individual titles. Salida's Katie Dreher extended her run of success in the triple jump by winning that event with a mark of 35-8. Jacy Jacobsen, pictured approaching the bar at right, cleared 5-3 to win the high jump. Sheridan's Tacole Williams swept the 100 and 200 meter events, winning in 13.31 and 27.07, respectively. And, finally, The Classical Academy added of set of victories of their own. The Titans started off the meet by winning the 4 X 800 in a meet record 9:49.70, and finished it by winning the 4 X 400. Between those events, Kelsey Brown, pictured at left anchoring the 4 X 800, won the 800 meters with a time of 2:24.83, Kaitlin Hanenburg won the 3200 with an 11:24.54, and by Emily LaValley won the 300 hurdles with a time of 49.10. The Titans put 113.5 points on the board to finish nearly 20 points ahead of second-place Sand Creek.
