Finley tops his season marks (update)

Mason Finley, apparently, saves his best for home meets.

Although the Buena Vista Invitational is strictly a non-qualifying, small school affair, don't tell Mason Finley that. Finley threw 65-5 in the shot put and 211-10 in the discus last night. Three of the discus tosses exceeded 210 feet, and all four exceeded 200 feet. Buena Vista throws coach Mike Carr described it aptly as "a sight to behold."

Please note, however, that Finley's discus throw will not qualify as a state all-classification record. A steel tape, a necessary condition for certifying a state record throw, was not available to measure the throw.

This weekend, Buena Vista heads to the Tri-Peaks League meet in Colorado Springs, then over Wolf Creek Pass to Bayfield for the regional meet, and, finally, to Pueblo for the state meet. Some concern is already being expressed about the discus venue at Pueblo's Dutch Clark Stadium. More than one person has observed that Finley just might launch the discus over the edge of the hill that overlooks the Arkansas River.
