4A/5A State Notes

A more complete article and a few photos from the 4A/5A state meet will be forthcoming. For now, a few of the highlights of the meet:

4A

  • Kevin Williams of D'Evelyn runs 9:06.27 virtually uncontested in the 3200 meters. He falls a second short, however, of breaking Brent Vaughn's all-time mark in the event. Wes Rickman was a DNF. Williams also won the 1600 on Friday in 4:14.76.
  • Sierra's Kelby Dias has a huge meet, winning the 110 hurdles in 14.09, the 300 hurdles in 37.59, and the long jump with a leap of 22=2.75.
  • Patrick Richards of Widefield pulls the upset of the weekend by beating Longmont's Matt Butcher in the 400 with a time of 47.50. Butcher goes on the win the 200, however, in 21.28.
  • Joe Morris of Golden wins the 100 in a wind-legal 10.61.
  • Battle Mountain wins the 4 X 800 in a sizzling 7:52.94.
  • Ken Harriman of Pueblo South repeats as shot put champion.
  • Despite Kelby Dias's big day and a couple of outstanding relay performances for Sierra, Longmont wins the team title by 10 points.
  • Emily Blok of Conifer has another outstanding state meet, winning the 100 (11.80), 200 (24.11), and 400 (55.69).
  • Laura Tremblay of Thompson Valley pulls off the 800-1600 double, winning in 2:13.68 and 5:03.23.
  • Greeley West's Kendra Gerk closes out her high school career with a 10:55.49 in the 3200.
  • Alamosa stuns nobody in southern Colorado but everyone from Denver northward by winning the 4 X 800 in 9:28.44, barely edging favored Mullen.
  • Liz Johnson of Fossil Ridge returns to form for a final hurrah in the discus, winning with a throw of 134-4.
  • Longmont's Elizabeth Stover sets a meet record with a finish of 13-3 in the pole vault.
  • Thompson Valley's 4 X 200 and 4 X 400 relays pull through in a big way to help them to a convincing team title.

5A

  • Montbello is the girls' team with the answers, winning the meet by 7.5 points over Fort Collins. Natasha Gay leads the charge by winning the 200 and placing second in the 100. Montbello also wins the 4 X 100 and 4 X 200 relays.
  • Arvada's Ashley Fanelli has a huge finish to her high school career, winning the triple jump at 38-6.75, placing second in the high jump, and third in the long jump.
  • Kelli Ehardt of Rampart finishes with a 5A meet record of 13-1 in the pole vault.
  • Eleanor Fulton of Highlands Ranch wins the 1600 in 5:00.99, but misses the distance double as Air Academy's Allie McLaughlin runs 10:49.46 to win the 3200.
  • Brianna Patton of Eaglecrest smokes the field in 14:08 to win the 100 hurdles.
  • ThunderRidge has all the answers in the 4 X 400, winning in 3:54.78.
  • Brooke Jackson of Littleton throws an all-classification best of 134-8 to pull an upset in the girls' discus.
  • Although not exactly an unknown, Arapahoe puts all the pieces together at the right time to triumph over a tightly packed field in the team race.
  • Dominick Roberts of Denver East wins the 200 (21.09) and 400 (47.27).
  • Dey Tuach of Thornton runs 1:52.42 to easily win the 800.
  • Evan Appel of Dakota Ridge sweeps the 1600 and 3200 in 4:16.31 and 9:17.84.
  • Cory Engel of Northglenn and Jordan Aguilar of Regis Jesuit surprise a few people by winning the hurdle events.
  • Chase Cooper of Smoky Hill wins the pole vault at 16-7.
  • Cherry Creek's Roman Holmes sweeps the long and triple jumps, breaking 50 feet in the triple with a leap of 50-9.25.
