Mines High School Indoor #1: A Rousing Success on the First Try

Top Moments of the Meet (1): The Multi-Talented Chase McLean

If you were paying close attention last spring, you may have picked up on the name of Chase McLean. He was a rising star in the Valor Christian ranks.

You probably will not have to pay nearly as close of attention this spring to notice. Last night at the Mines HS Indoor #1, McLean put on quite a show.

McLean's Thursday evening parade of events included the pole vault, the 60 meter hurdles, the 400, and the long jump. All of that in less than 145 minutes. Rumor floating around Steinhauer Field House has it that Valor coach Brian Kula has been asking people lately about the correct spelling of decathlon.

It's not hard to see why.

The boys long jump was over almost as soon as the meet began, but not before McLean added a 20-2.75 mark to his personal list of PRs.

What should we see next but Mr. McLean toting around a pole? Before long, he was using it. And using it well. McLean bowed out of the pole vault competition after clearing 13-0 and claiming fourth place. Another PR.

This could become habit forming...

In McLean's other two events of the evening, he earned a second place in the 60 meter hurdles at 8.58. Guess what? Another PR!

The final event of the evening, for both McLean and the meet, was the 400 meter dash. McLean saved a PR in that event for a later date (and perhaps a venue with wider turns), but his 53.80 was still good enough for the win.

Mr. McLean, that unidentified number calling you on your phone might be the Great Southwest meet in June. I hear it's a great place for decathlon competition.
