2017 Air Force Indoor Open: A Meet Reaches Its Tipping Point

Top Moments of the Meet (2): A Dazzling 800

It's difficult to say when you're going to get a really good 800. So much depends on how the race goes out. Fast 800s require fast beginnings; that's just the way it is.

So, although the Air Force High School Open boasted what was easily the top boys 800 field of the season to date, the field came with no guarantees.

But, the first lap was promising. Hayelom Fitsum and Yanique Borne, likely the two in the field with the strongest 800 meter resumes, surged to the front on the second half of the first lap and passed by the camera at about 37 seconds.

Fitsum and Borne continued their battle over the next lap-and-a-half, both opening some space on the field, but with Fitsum also appearing just about ready to put Borne away.

Borne, however, was not finished and came surging up on Fitsum's shoulder as the two came off the final turn. Surge met counter-surge all the way down the finish straight.

At the finish line, it was Fitsum at 1:56.38 and Borne at 1:56.81, easily the two top 800s in Colorado for the season to date.

Also finishing in under two minutes were David Moore, Ben Kelley, and Drew Johnson, making for a simply outstanding three laps of indoor action.
