2017 Broomfield Shootout: A Day Late, But Still a Great Meet

Cherokee Trail Wins the Boys Meet

Glancing over at the 5A boys virtual meet, there a number of boys teams that attended the shootout ranked ahead of Cherokee Trail, but at the end of the day, Cherokee Trail overwhelmingly won the meet 92-70 over Monarch. For those who have been paying attention to track and field for the last few years, seeing a strong Cherokee Trail team show up to a meet should never be a surprise, however how CT got the job done may have been the most interesting. A team does not rack up 90 points in a meet this size without some strong showings.

All day, the CT boys collected all of one event title as Ruben Estrada won the boys discus with a toss of 148-2. As any good track coach knows, winning a meet is a battle of attrition. That means in the absence of simply having an athlete winning every event, athletes manage to score points multiple times in multiple ways. In addition to his discus title, Estrada took second in the shot put at 49-2.35.

Elsewhere at the meet, Tyler Kruse exploded for a second in the long jump (20-7.5) and a third in the 100m (11.22). Rylan Wallace was 3rd in the 1600 (4:25.36) and then came back to take 6th in the 3200 (9:42.29). Kellen Monestine also managed a pair of thirds in the hurdle events (15.36 and 40.80). Put this altogether with some very solid relays and you have a recipe for success.
