2017 Elbert Invitational: Peyton Boys, Calhan Girls Roll To Team Titles

Elbert Invitational Girls: First Places Propel Calhan To Team Title

Brittany Fuchs gets the stick with an already-prohibitive lead in the 4x100.

Unlike the boys, there was a girls team with a decided advantage in first places. That team would be the girls in blue--Calhan. To be sure, there were other teams in blue, but on this day, Calhan was THE team in blue.

If you've hung around Calhan long enough, you've probably a) been to the El Paso County Fair, b) been to the Paint Mines, and c) know that Brittany Fuchs is something of a small-school sprint phenom. It was c) that made the difference today.

Fuchs ran, virtually uncontested to the 100 (13.0) and 200 (27.61) titles. Margins of victory were well over a second in both cases. Fuchs also anchored a speedy 4x100 to another hefty margin of victory. Fuchs did, however, have to settle for second in the 400 when Peyton's Kaylee Kearse wouldn't take no for an answer. Fuchs and Kearse were neck-and-neck at the top of the finish straight, but Kearse had more gas in the tank over the last 100 meters.

But, Calhan is not a one-trick show. Cobbling on points in large numbers to Fuchs' four-event effort were Kieran Kneis and Briana Memije who went 1-2 in the 3200, Anne Shaffer who won the 300 hurdles, Savannah Teetor who added a second and a third in the hurdle events, and a veritable army of nickel-and-dimers.

Nobody else could keep pace.

Other points of light showed up here and there. Peyton freshman Jenny Dekker won the 100 hurdles in 17.40 and finished second to Kiowa's Melanie Deering in the 800. Deering just missed, on misses, adding the high jump title to her day's accomplishments. Kiowa got another event title from Andrea Miller with an even 93 feet in the discus.
