Things We Stand To Learn This Weekend

Desert Twilight isn't in Colorado, but Colorado is coming to Desert Twilight.

It should be a doozy of a weekend.

For one thing, you've got a quite sizable delegation of Colorado teams headed down to Desert Twilight to run after dark. That list of teams (and I finally found the comprehensive list) includes Niwot, Silver Creek, Cherry Creek, Cherokee Trail, Coronado, Shining Mountain, Air Academy, Widefield, Fossil Ridge, Durango, Discovery Canyon, Valor Christian, and Telluride. I hope I haven't missed anyone this time around.

And, I think it's fair to say those schools would make a pretty good meet just by themselves.

But, they won't be by themselves. Teams are also coming from (at least) California, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Hawai'i, and Virginia. Curiously, I found no schools from Utah on the list of teams.

Needless to say, Desert Twilight will provide a pretty good window on where Colorado teams stand relative to the top Arizona programs. Top Arizona programs simply don't miss this meet. With Rio Rancho and Albuquerque Academy both having made trips to Colorado, we already have a decent idea where Colorado schools stand with respect to two top tier New Mexico programs. Utah comparisons don't come as easily.

Back here at home, I don't want to preempt any meet previews I intend to write later in the week, but I am seeing a very high interest value in the Salida, Polson Ranch, and Thornton meets. All three meets are boasting very solid draws of teams and should help us sort out which teams are ending September with momentum and which teams are struggling to maintain the momentum they've built.

It's also worth noting this could be the weekend we all get final word on the eligibility status of Levi Kilian, Cole Sprout, and Tyler Scholl for the remainder of the season. I have already more or less made up my mind on what I think the situation will be for each of the three high-profile transfers, but confirmation for each could come this weekend. All three schools involved have reached the required five varsity meets, so all three athletes should be varsity eligible this weekend if they're going to be varsity eligible. Valor is at Desert Twilight. I don't know yet where SkyView Academy will be. I'm not at all sure Heritage Christian Academy is competing this weekend, though.
