2017 Colorado Springs Metro: Rampart, Coronado Divide 5A Spoils

Varsity Boys: Rampart Rules 5A; TCA Tames 4A

At the Colorado Springs Metro League meet, mental scoring can get a little confusing. That's because 4A and 5A run together in one large field, with the computer separating classifications for the purposes of team scoring. It's better that way for the competition, but it typically makes it considerably more difficult to put an eyeball to the field and determine who is winning the race.

Only it wasn't so difficult yesterday. Only those who suffer from rather aggressive colorblindness would have been missing any clues about Rampart's domination up front. Ramparts blindingly bright yellow singlets make them pretty hard to miss in any field. And, Connor McCabe, Jacob Dewey, Afeworki Zeru, Sadio Fenner, and Ben Conlin weren't exactly doing much to blend in.

They seemed quite intent, rather, on staking out places at the front of the field. In the end, only Doherty's Hayden Martinez (2nd - 16:36), Coronado's Conor Strizich (6th), and Palmer's Gus McIntyre (7th) broke up a perfect score for the Rams.

Connor McCabe took a rather comfortable win in 16:32. If that seems slow, go back and reread the first page of this article.

The CSML 4A outcome was a bit more camoflauged. Two of those who would normally be regarded as top contenders--David Fine and Canaan Lamberth--sat this one out, and that did little to add clarity to the outcome of the race.

Eventually, though, a fairly predictable cast of colors and characters emerged at the front of the field. TCA's Ryan Moen led the 4A finishers in 16:42. Mesa Ridge's Matthew Roberds claimed second, followed by Mason Norman, Cole Munoz, and Richie Roberds rounding out the top five.

Widefield's late-in-the-race surge was a case of too little and too late, as The Classical Academy rode high finishes by Moen and Norman to a 37 - 44 margin of victory in the team scoring.
