Anyone who saw Cole Sprout's pounce in the final stages of the 1600m at the Mullen Invitational last weekend in 4:12 may not be too surprised by his latest feat.
The Valor Christian sophomore ran away from the field to capture the win and sophomore national class 3000m record of 8:13.85 at the Oregon Relays on Friday.
Not only is the time the fastest 3000m in the country, but when converted to a 3200, it would put Sprout just ahead of fellow-Coloradan Michael Mooney's nation-leading 8:50.
The result marks the second time in the past week that Sprout has grabbed national headlines, as his two massive performances thrust him into the national conversation. His 4:12-altitude 1600m would rank No. 1 with a conversion, and now his 3000m is a US No. 1 as well.
