Great At State: The 5A Recap

Jalen Lyon led Fountain-Ft. Carson to the overall team title.

Like the girls, the boy's side of the competition was littered with a slew of incredible performances.

Starting with the 100, Devin Cadena and Deondre Ritter took the race down to the line. An official review revealed that Cadena had claimed the event 10.70 to Ritter's 10.71.

Cue Jalen Lyon.

Lyon was impressive throughout the entire meet. The senior starred on state champion Fountain-Ft.Carson's squad, claiming two state titles of his own, and leading them to a few relay titles as well.

Lyon made no contest of the 200 and the 400, which he won in 21.65, and 48.10. When he was on the track, he was unbeatable.

Likewise, Landon Rast brought a similar dominance to the 800, which he nearly soloed in 1:53.03. The senior led from the gun and ran without shadows through the finish line a clear second-a-half ahead of Carter Dillon.

Dillon endured two runner-up finishes in individual events. The other coming in the 1,600, which he nearly, nearly claimed.

Michael Mooney pushed the middle laps of the race, though Dillon was flying far and away in the final 300. After creating a sizeable gap, Mooney turned on the jets and kicked Carter down in the final strides. It appeared that Dillon thought he had the race won, but Mooney's final lean proved to be the difference.

After the two crashed at the finish line, the next few moments hung in the air as a winner was decided. And it was Mooney in 4:16.15 to Dillon's 4:16.17.

The state title was Mooney's second of the meet, however, as he used a late kick to run down Harrison Scudamore in the 3,200 on Thursday.

Scudamore nearly had his day, kicking hard and making Mooney work for it, but in the end it was all Mooney, as he ran 9:12.97 to Scudamore's 9:13.92

Finishing third in both the 1,600 and the 3,200 was sophomore Easton Allredwho has a clear path to state titles next year.

The 110 hurdles saw a tight race turn into an upset, as Andrew Doctor took down pre-race favorite Joel NyatusahDoctor went 14.35 to claim the victory of Nyatusah's 14.38.

Likewise, another upset victory came in the 300 hurdles, where Mitchell Gorman ran away with a 37.83 victory. He ran clear of the field in the final hurdles though appeared shocked as he crossed the line.

Jequan Hogan was a highlight in the field events. The senior took the high jump with a jump of 6-8, but was surprisingly beaten in the triple jump, which is one of his better events. Allam Bushara claimed the upset in the triple jump, going 49-9.5 to beat Hogan by nearly two feet. On the other side of the spectrum, the long jump went a little more according to plan, with Micaylon Moore taking the win with a 22-10.25 jump.

The discus was a fairly close affair, with Jawuan Tate claiming a slim victory over Drake NugentTate went 158-9 to beat Nugent's 158-1. But Nugent did get to have his day, however, as he took the shot put with a toss of 55-9.5. The mark was a staggering four-feet ahead of his nearest competitor.

In the pole vault... Well, we'll get to that on the next page...

In the relays Cherry Creek stormed to a state title in the 4x1, going 42.46, though the 4x2 and 4x4 was all Fountain-Ft. Carson. The 4x8 was a close race that led to the fastest time in the state. Mountain Vista had their day with a eye-popping 7:49 victory.

In the team race there wasn't anyone who could fully keep pace with Fountain-Ft. Carson. They successfully defend their title with 100 points, just ahead of Cherry Creek's 71.
