Air Force HS Open Preview: Quality & Quantity

60

First: We will not be seeing The Arria Minor in the 60, or the 200, (she's in the 400).

Second: If you haven't already noticed, now is the time to remember the name: Sydney Holiday. The Wyoming transplant competing for FK Elite this indoor season will suit up in Broomfield blue this spring.

She won four state titles in Wyoming last year, claiming the 100, 200, 100 hurdles, and the long jump.

This indoor season she's won eight of nine 60 races, and holds a PR of 7.65, which is currently No. 3 in Colorado.

The road to win No. 9 will be tough, however, as she'll have to battle both Teagan Zwaanstra and Lauren Cox. Zwaanastra has run 7.73 this season, and Cox has run 7.77.

200

We'll have another tight race here. The time Holiday will toe the line and face Camille Peisner. Holiday has run one 200 this season - a 25.31, which is just behind Peisner's 25.17. But both girls will have to challenge Abigail Tamminga, who owns a 24.72 outdoor PR.

400

We'll see Colorado's fastest (ever) quarter miler here, as Arria Minor is set to race. Minor nabbed a meet record in 200 last year, and appears to want to add the 400 to her name. She's run one 400 in 2019, and it was a 55.75 in Arkansas. Keep an eye on the clock, because the meet record stands at 55.34.

The UGA-bound senior owns the Colorado state record of 51.92 and is a clear favorite to claim the title this weekend.

But keep an eye on Peisner and Taylor James, who will likely battle for that runner-up spot.

800

Speaking of Taylor James, if she had a signature event (she's proven successful in many...) it'd be the 800. The 4A state champ will run her first half-mile of 2019 this weekend. She's already run 1:39 in the 600 indoors this season, which says she's ready to run fast. She went 2:13.55 outdoors last year.

Mile

We've got a loaded mile on tap...

Taylor Whitfield hasn't raced indoors yet, but she owns a 5:02 1,600 PR, and was the 5A cross country state runner-up this past fall. She'll have teammate Keely Jones to work with, as Jones has run 5:07 outdoors, and owns a stellar 2:12 800 PR. Additionally 5:11 miler Isabella Prosceno is in the race, along with 5:03 miler Mackenzie Marler, who is coming down from Wyoming.

2 Mile

Here's another event with great potential for a big finish, and a meet record. We'll see Lanie Szuch and the sister duo of Cameron McConnell and Caitlin McConnell battle it out. Szuch has already run a 10:31 3,000 indoors this season, and Caitlin McConnell has raced indoors once in 2019 - a 5:15 1,500, though she did finish fourth at state this past fall, and owns a 18:04 5k PR. Cameron McConnell topped them all this past fall, however, though she hasn't raced indoors yet. Her 17:17 5k PR from this past fall tops all three girls.

Currently the meet record stands at 11:26.

60 Hurdles

Anna Hall highlights a stellar field that includes Sydney Holiday and Esther Diza-Mbelolo. These are the top three 60 hurdlers in Colorado so far this year. Hall's 8.68 leads the way, and it's right in front of Holiday's 8.77, and Mbelolo's 8.89, which both times came from Wednesday night's meet at Mines.

High Jump

A year ago Anna Hall went 5-10 to win this event in a new meet record, and once again she enters the meet as a clear favorite. She's already gone 5-10 this season, and hasn't jumped below 5-7. Hall went 6-0 outdoors last year, and appears to be inching closer to that mark already.

If she's got company, it'll come from Riley Masten, who has gone 5-7 - a PR - indoors this season. Masten was the 2018 state runner-up in this event.

Long Jump

The field can exhale, because no, 19-9 long jumper Anna Hall, and 19-2.25 Mia Manson, are not entered in the event.

This opens the door for a solid battle between Abigail Tamminga Sadie McMullen, and Teagan Zwaanstra, who have all gone over 18 feet. Tamminga and McMullen are the No. 3 and No. 4 jumpers so far this season, and they've been separated by just a few inches. Tamminga has gone 18-5.5, while McMullen's 18-5 is just behind her.

Triple Jump

Hailey Harris leads the charge here with her state-leading 38-0.25 jump. She was fourth at state last year in this event, but has nearly surpassed her outdoor PR indoors. She's a clear favorite heading into this weekend's competition and could threaten the 38-9.75 meet record.

Pole Vault

We've got solid battle brewing in the pole vault...

2x5A state champ Mia Manson won this event last year with a 13-1 vault before going on to reach 13-6 a few weeks later, though she'll have her hands full this year.

Utah's Sevanna Hanson is set to compete, and has gone 12-0 indoor this season. So far that's just a few inches above Manson's 11-8 season best. Additionally, Hanson owns a 12-9 outdoor PR.

Shot Put

Anna Hall has clearly made massive gains in the shot this season, and enters the meet as the favorite to claim the event. She's already tossed 42-3.25, which is clear of the field.

Perhaps the big question is: Can she claim three events this weekend?
