Gunnison might be one of the coldest places in Colorado, or the country for that matter, but Arria Minor is bringing the heat to the Mountaineer Field House this weekend.
Yes - you read that right.
The fastest quarter miler in Colorado history is heading to Gunnison to run the 400 and the 200. This inevitably means that those meet records, and track records, are in danger of being rewritten, because Minor not only races the competition, she races history.
The Denver East senior and future Georgia Bulldog is set to star among a fairly solid field headed to Western this weekend.
On the girl's side of the competition we'll see Rylee Haynes in the high jump and the 60 hurdles, and Ashten Loeks in the 1,600 steeple.
Avery Doan will battle Utah state cross country champion Kylah Ricks in the girl's mile, and that's not the only distance event we'll see a battle. The girl's 800 should make for a great race, as Loeks, Doan, and Ricks will toe the line.
In the weight throw we've got a battle brewing between the top three throwers in the state. Jane Powers, Joy Gerow, and Amanda Opp are set to compete.
Highlighting the boy's competition will be Korey Hairston, Gavin Sawchuk, and Langston Williams. Hairston and Sawhuck enter the 60 as the pre-race favorites, while Williams holds the honor in the 400, but the battle to watch here will be in the 200, where Hairston, Williams, and Sawchuk meet in the middle. Currently, Sawhuck is the state leader with his 21.99, while Hairston is No. 9, and Williams No. 10.
Future Mountaineer, Tyman Smart, headlines the 1,600 steeple, and he's also competing in the 2 mile. Cutting that distance in half, we've got the No. 3 miler in Colorado, Yonas Mogos headlining the mile, and he'll double back to battle Gunnison's Braydon O'Neill in the 800.
