A Lyons Sweep Of 2A

The girl's race was a rematch of the Region 1 Championships, with Quin Gregg and Helen Cross battling it out on the course one more time.

Ashleigh Gardner took the early pacing duties, leading the pack through the opening mile in 6:19. Audrey Maroney hovered over her shoulder, along with Cross, while Gregg sat back and let the race unfold before putting her stamp on it.

Mile 2 belonged to the Lyons sophomore, however. The 2018 runner-up used the challenging back-side of the course to attack the field and make her statement.

Gregg dropped a negative split through two miles, while the race behind her blew up. Cross gave chase, about 10 seconds back. Meanwhile Jamieson Legh ate up the remains of the once-lead pack by running a big negative split.

Up ahead, the race belonged to Gregg.

After finishing in the runner-up spot to teammate Katie Fankhouser a year ago, Gregg got to take one more step up on the podium, as she captured her first state title.

The Lyons sophomore entered Penrose Stadium to the roar of the crowd, clear of her chasers in 19:24. 10 seconds later Cross kicked in for the runner-up spot in 19:34.

The race for third was perhaps the most competitive of the day, as Legh kicked hard to nab the third spot in 19:58, just ahead of Maroney, and Lyons teammate Fankhouser.

The Gregg, Legh, and Fankhouser storming the top-five spots, Lyons didn't have to wait to tally up the team score, because they pumped all three-scoring runners into the top five for a dominating team victory.

Lyons tallied just 9 points, beating out their 2018 domination.

Behind them was a hotly contested team race, with the next four squads finishing within 19 points of each other.

Buena Vista emerged as the runner-up, tallying 61 points with Mallory Salazar and Molly McMurry cracking into the top-10, finishing sixth and 10th.

Golden View Classical Academy took third, just eight points back with 69 points, while Rocky Ford finished fourth with 72 points, Platte Canyon finished fifth with 76, and Clear Creek took sixth with 80 points.
