Three Predictions For The Season Ahead: 1A

Railey Largent Fills Her Sister's Spikes

Railey Largent (left) has got some big spikes to fill, but her freshman season on the track proved that she's clearly up for the challenge.

A year ago at the State meet her older sister - Jentry Largent (right) - nearly swept the sprints, winning the 100 and 400, and finishing second in the 200 by four-hundredths of a second.

Railey finished second to Jentry in the 100 for a Largent 1-2, and fourth in the 200.

But Railey (Largent moving forward) should have her hands full in the sprints.

She'll have 200 defending state champ Desirae Ortivez, and Avery Palmgren to beat to the line.

This trio will likely battle it out in the 100 and 200 - Ortivez finished fourth in the 100, and Palmgren finished third.

What gives Largent a bit of an edge is her age - she toed the line at JeffCo Stadium at the State Championships for the first time last year as a freshman.

Additionally, the DeBeque sophomore dropped two personal bests at the state meet, running 12.84 in the 100, and 26.85.

She dipped under 13 seconds in the 100 four times last season, while she chopped off over half a second in the 200 at State.

A freshman finding their stride on the final weekend of the season hints at what we'll see in coming years.

She's the top returner in the 100, and the third-fastest returner in the 200 (by just over two-tenths of a second.) She's got year's worth of experience in her spikes now - how much faster can she run?

Largent's older sister claimed two state titles last year - and nearly had three. With a few gold medals already in the family, the bar is set. There's a passing of the spikes set for the coming months within the Largent family.
