Racing The Rain At The Jeffco 4A/5A League Championships

Two miles into the girl's 4A race and there was no clear front-runner.

A pack of about about six snaked through the trees, led by Conifer's Audrey VanWestrienen. Hot on her heels were Brooke TompkinsMadelyn BaillieLily MourerMeredith Overton, and Lucy Bell

Onwards into the final mile the race began to heat up, and VanWestrienen made sure not to leave this one for the kickers.

The Conifer sophomore surged hard into the third mile and created a gap that only grew. The move was decisive, and it paid off for VanWestrienen, who captured the first win of her high school career, and a massive 50-second Colorado personal best.

VanWestrienen claimed the Jeffco 4A league title in 19:42.

Behind her Golden's Mourer kicked late to claim the runner-up spot in a season-best of 19:50. Tompkins took third two-seconds back in 19:52, which was just ahead of Green Mountain teammate, Bell, who finished fourth in 19:55. Overton took fifth in 20:02 to match even - Golden and Green Mountain had four of the top-five, and two each.

The team race was clearly going down to single digits.

Green Mountain's Lillian Young finished eighth, though Golden responded with Sienna Vuijsters, and Novalie Christensen finishing 10-11.

Green Mountain capped their scoring with Jadyn Laster, and Alley Harris, who finished 12-13, and the team race was wrapped up - they tallied 37 points to Golden's 39.
