Future Stars: Big Years Ahead In The Girls High Jump

Who are the next crop of Colorado track & field stars?

This new series will put a spotlight on freshmen and sophomores who are on the rise - starting with freshmen this week. We'll scan Colorado's scene and point out some of the more eyebrow-raising performances each week, introducing you to Future Stars.

For starters, let's take a look at the girl's high jump...

Cherokee Trail's Ryen Galloway, Air Academy's Tatyonna Brown and Ellicott's Teysia Tacoronte (pictured above) might be only two weeks into their first high school track and field season, but they're already making a splash.

Galloway won her first high school high jump competition, clearing 5-3 at the Centennial League Opener last week - that currently ranks her No. 2 in All Classifications

Editor's Note: For clarification "All Classification" rankings are also "All Grades."

Brown and Tacoronte went 1-2 in the high jump at the Harrison Panther Invite, with Brown clearing 5-2, and Tacoronte an inch down in 5-1.

Galloway, Brown, and Tacoronte are currently 1-2-3 in freshmen rankings, and are within the Top-10 All-Classification rankings.

A Quick Glance:

Cherokee Trail's Sky Thompson is currently the No. 1 long jumper in All Classifications with a 18-9.25 leap.

Cherokee Trail's Kaeli Powe is currently No. 1 in the triple jump in All-Classificationsand No. 2 in the long jump.

Eaglecrest's Jaylynn Wilson has already run 12.64 in the 200, and 25.67 in the 200 - both marks rank her in the Top-10 All-Classification rankings.

Despite her freshman status, The Vanguard's Nadhia Campos can hardly be defined as a "Future Star" - she's already there. The 2A state cross country champion is currently the No. 1 1,600 runner in 3A by eight-seconds.

For the boys Cherokee Trail's Peyton Sommers is currently the No. 1 ranked freshmen in the 100, and the 200, with times of 11.72 in the 100, and 22.85 in the 200. His 200 performance ranks him within the Top-14 All-Classification rankings.

Windsor's Cole Mazurana is currently the No. 1 3,200 freshmen by 17 seconds with his 10:05 persona best. The time also ranks him in the Top-13 in All Classifications.

On an unrelated, but totally related note - Cherokee Trail has got to have one of the best, if not the best freshmen class...
