It's been a month since the Colorado State Championships, and yet the finish of the boys 5A 3,200 final still sends shockwaves through the system.
Eight laps and still, only two-hundredths of a second separated the state champion from the runner up.
A year ago Dane Eike lost this event in a kick, but this year he won it with one.
With a lap to go Mountain Vista's Tyler Downs led Eike and Vista-teammate Benjamin Anderson through the bell-lap. But having been here before, Eike timed this one to perfection.
The Valor Christian junior kicked hard on the backstretch and held off a late-charging Anderson to claim his first state title in 9:13.27.
Anderson was barely a stride back in 9:13.48, while teammate Downs was a second back in 9:14.34.
