Exactly one year ago Ken Howell of Roosevelt and I were setting up for the University Bulldog Invitational, and Ken came up with the idea of creating a countywide championships. By the end of the meet, we enthusiastically had a rough outline of the Weld County (Welco) Championships.
Weld County is one of the most diverse counties in all of Colorado. In addition to being the largest Colorado county in terms of land area it is also the largest agriculture county and has a significant urban and industrial presence. All of this combines to make Weld County a place includes large urban and suburban schools as well as small rural schools. In all, 20 of 21 schools (Erie had a prior meet commitment) made the trip to District 6 Stadium in Greeley for the 1st Annual Welco Championships.
