The wind and heat
Very strong winds, and temperatures approaching 90 degrees, greeted the athletes early in the meet. Many of the races became tactical affairs, with larger-than-normal lead packs, often until late in the race. The leaders often seemed content to draft off of others to conserve energy. The unseasonable conditions certainly affected the times posted by the runners. Having been at this meet on multiple occasions, it appeared the times were overall slower than in the past, particularly the winning times.
