MLK Mile High 2017: Busting Open the Gates

Top Moments of the Meet (1) - Arria Minor Isn't the Only One with National-Class Speed

Devin Cadena cruises through prelims.

We caught a little glimpse of what Devin Cadena had under the hood at the Air Force Holiday Open back in December, but that didn't quite prepare us for what was coming at the MLK Mile High Classic.

Cadena opened up with a 6.96 to take top honors in prelims. That was a full .11 better than second place in an event where mere hundredths of a second make all the difference in the world. If Cadena shut it down there and pulled the key out of the ignition it still would have been a PR and a very nice day.

But there was more coming.

An hour or so later in finals, Cadena burst out of the blocks again. This time, it was for real. Cadena's image registered on the FinishLynx camera 6.84 seconds later.

And, remember that .11 gap on second from prelims? This time, Cadena's gap on second was .21 seconds.

Oh, and by the way, Cadena's mark has him currently tied for fourth in the national rankings at 60 meters.

If Cadena can stay healthy through May, it's starting to look like a very good sprint season for Rock Canyon High School.
