Walsh's Terrell Stafford helped the Eagles to a classification-best 3:37.91 seed time in the 4x400, but any time at 3:48.83 or better got you into the 1A state meet. Colorado Track XC file photo.

As we stare down the opening of the 2013 CHSAA track and field season, a weekend snowstorm looms on the horizon. Let's all hope that's not the scenario that greets us the week of the state meet.

As athletes think about the season ahead, one question that runs through the minds of a lot of individuals is, "What will it take to make it to state?" The answer to that question, of course, varies a great deal by classification. And, while there's no way to project now exactly what it will take to make it to state this year, the first and best indicator is what it took to make it to state last year. That's what this series of articles is about. We'll break down those magical marks for each classification and gender over the next few days.

Be warned, however, that the qualification standards for state have been on a steady rise since the rankings system came into use here in Colorado. As a general rule, it gets a little tougher to make it to state every year. With that as a caveat, here's what it took to make it to state in 2012 for 1A boys:
