In this week's edition of Colorado Future Stars we'll be taking a look at recent freshmen performances.
Colorado, meet Zona Welling!
The Heritage freshman recently finished second in the 100 and the 200 at the The Pomona Invitational in class-leading times of 12.04 and 24.51.
Her 100 time is currently No. 2 in 5A, and her 200 is also No. 2 in 5A.
Welling's performance at The Pomona Invitational is quite a breakout - she opened her season running 12.57 in the 100, and 25.83 in the 200.
Since then she's been making gains just about every week.
As an eighth-grader she was the 2023 USATF Colorado Junior Olympic Track & Field Champion in the 100 and the 200.
She also ran 58.73 last summer too, which brings up the question: will she run a 400 this spring?
What's additionally exciting about the second-fastest sprinter in 5A being a sophomore is the fact that the No. 1 sprinter (Ellie Londo -- which we covered last week) is a sophomore, meaning we could have three years of great races on tap between these two.
