Kim's Tai Ann Nittler was one of six 1A girls to qualify for state in the 1600 with times below 6:00. As many of four of those six could be returning this year. Colorado Track XC file photo.

Very few 1A schools are in action this weekend, as the smaller schools--and especially those with basketball teams still alive in the state tournament--tend to wait longer to get their track seasons started.

But, as athletes think about the season ahead, one question that runs through the minds of a lot of individuals is, "What will it take to make it to state?" The answer to that question, of course, varies a great deal by classification. And, while there's no way to project now exactly what it will take to make it to state this year, the first and best indicator is what it took to make it to state last year. That's what this series of articles is about. We'll break down those magical marks for each classification and gender over the next few days.

Be warned, however, that the qualification standards for state have been on a steady rise since the rankings system came into use here in Colorado. As a general rule, it gets a little tougher to make it to state every year. With that as a caveat, here's what it took to make it to state in 2012 for 1A girls:
