Everyone knows about Montrose's distance presence, but Sam Distel gives the Indians a substantial presence in the rings as well.

The Southwestern League enjoys the unusual distinction of being a mixed 4A/5A league with a scant five teams. Montezuma-Cortez left the league this school year for the Intermountain League, leaving the Southwestern League with what was at one time easily the five largest schools on the Western Slope.  Now, the SWL stands as a monument to the way things used to be on the Western Slope.

Since it is such a small league, though, we're only going 15-deep on the depth analysis. Even that may be a little long in a few events...

As was the case with the SWL girls, the league looks to be beholden this spring to the 4A boys teams--Montrose and Durango. The Grand Junction schools will try to play catch-up. Fruita Monument starts closest, but they are definitely a step back from the leaders.

Top returning athletes from around the league include: Evan Graff, Ian Meek, Jeremy Trujillo, Justin Hawkins, Kyle Stevenson, Sam Distel, and Tylan Booth (Montrose), Ben Bates, Camden Garland, Dylan Baken, Harry Steinberg, and Kaleb McMunn (Durango), Evan Arcand, Konrad Behrens, and Kyle Fineran (Fruita Monument), and Alex Cox, Christian Dennis, Colin Morrison, and Preston Deters (Grand Junction).

Shown at the bottom is a list of the league's cross country freshmen from the fall. Expect a couple of them to be making a difference in distance results this spring.

2016 co HS M Outdoor Track Team Scores (Returners Only)

Calculated as of February 10, 2017

These rankings were calculated by scoring the rankings as a meet. We scored 15 deep for individuals and 20 deep for relays. For example, for individuals 1st place received 15 points for their team, on down to 1 point for 15th place.

Athletes whose graduation years are unknown were left out of the list.
