Bridging January into February: the weekend

Western State's Bennie Kirkwood shows the form that earned him RMAC field athlete of the week honors this week. Kirkwood will be jumping again in Alamosa on Friday. Photo by Alan Versaw.

It's a little easier this weekend to keep track of where the high schoolers are going than where the collegians are going, but we'll give both a shot here:

UW Invitational

The siren call of the Dempsey Arena is being heard for and wide. This is especially true for the distance types go to try to drop big times on an oversized oval at sea level, and there will be another similar opportunity later in February. Some of those who make the trip reach their goals and some do not, but there's no shortage of competition for those who make the trip. And, honestly, it looks like it's going to be a nice weekend to be someplace other than Colorado, unless you have a good use for fresh powder.

Chadron State Winter Classic HS Indoor Open

One or two Colorado high school athletes typically end up making the trip to northern Nebraska for this meet. I suppose it helps if you have a sibling at Chadron State you'd like to go visit for the weekend. In any case, we'll definitely check in on the results, but there are no promises at this point of actually turning up Colorado-based results.

CSM Twilight Open

A big chunk of Colorado's DII set, plus portions of the University of Colorado and Colorado State University teams, will be headed to Steinhauer Field House for some action on, in, and around the 189-meter oval. In years past, there's been known to be a high school athlete or two competing in this meet, but that's not necessarily an indicator for this year.

Update (2/1): There will be several high school athletes entered into this meet.

New Mexico Open (HS, Open)

It's almost closing time on entries for this meet. There are some Colorado entries, but not many and not any from the Front Range that I detected on a quick scan. For those wishing to make their own check of the entries, here is the meet registration page.

New Mexico Team Invitational

Air Force travels down to Albuquerque for a big-time collision with NCAA track and field powerhouses Notre Dame, Nebraska, Arizona State, and a few more. The meet won't be as big as last weekend's meet in Albuquerque, but it does promise to flush out some nice performances.

USATF-Colorado State Indoor Championships

This is where you can expect to find most of Colorado's high school indoor regulars this year. It is the USATF-Colorado championship meet, so expect attendance and participation to be up somewhat from previous meets at Balch Field House.

In a couple of late additions to our weekend calendar, it appears UNC is headed to the Mountain State Games in Pocatello, Idaho, and Western State will be traveling a couple hours to Alamosa for the Red and Green Shootout--a dual meet with Adams State under ASU's new bubble. If these two schools are getting together for a dual meet, it's safe to assume some bragging rights are on the line. We really haven't seen WSCU's front-line distance runners yet this winter. Could this be the season opener for them? It seems likely.

Owing to the coaches clinic this weekend, there will be no on-site coverage of indoor action on Colorado Track XC this weekend. Nevertheless, results will be posted as soon as they become available. And, if a nice photo our two happens to come my way, we'll find a way to share with the Colorado Track XC viewing audience.
