Thursday action at Simplot is limited to 3200 and 1600 prelims, plus the weight throw, but it's been a successful evening for Colorado nevertheless.
Cerake Geberkidane posted the top 3200 time in prelims with blazing 9:15.38. Inasmuch as Pocatello is about 4400 feet of elevation, this time would strongly suggest that Colorado's 3200 meter record could be in jeopardy this spring. Even without an altitude adjustment, Geberkidane's mark goes to #11 in the nation for the indoor 3200 this season.
Johnny Holsten and Michaela Bonenberger out of Fossil Ridge both ran in the prelims of the 3200, but failed to advance to finals.
Colorado's outcome in the women's weight throw was even better than in the 3200. Haley Showalter won the event with roughly a four-foot PR at an even 59 feet. That throw takes Showalter to #2 on the national indoor rankings. Also placing was Mariah Walker. Walker earned fifth with a throw of 46-10.5.
Qualifying for finals of the 1600 were Louis Hood, David Messerli, Liam Meirow, Dylan Day, and Sam Berg. Liam Meirow led all Colorado qualifies with a somewhat conservative outing of 4:30. It took a time of 4:39 to advance to finals in the 1600.
Advancing from Colorado in the girls 1600 were Tabor Scholl (first in prelims with a time of 5:04) and Darby Gilfillan. Look for a serious battle in finals as there appear to be some Utah girls advancing to finals who clearly have another gear than what they showed in prelims.
Nathan Dunivan snared a sixth in the weigh throw with a toss of 60-5.25.
