As promised earlier, I did a little work to determine what small-school standings for this year's NXR-SW meet in Casa Grande, Arizona, would look like.
We ended up with 18 boys teams that had enough runners at the meet to score teams. Three states--Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona were represented by full teams. As was the case with the girls, no full teams were found from Nevada or Utah small schools. In all, we find 11 Colorado schools, four New Mexico schools, and three Arizona schools fielding full teams at NXR-SW 2015.
At 18 schools, we do get a fairly robust meet, but a few things must still be kept in mind:
- In the absence of a small-school specific competition there is not a lot of incentive for small school teams to continue training together for up to an additional month beyond the end of their state-sanctioned seasons. It seems a reasonable expectation, though one without proof, that a publicized small-school competition, and more attention devoted to small-school cross country in general, might yield a substantially larger pool of complete teams.
- Many more small schools were represented with one or more individuals, but only the small schools with at least five finishers at NXR-SW are recorded in these results.
- NXR-SW has, to date, had a marketing slant that tends to be more attractive to larger school programs. While the slant has been benign enough, it is interesting to speculate what might happen if the smaller schools sensed there was more there for them.
The standings below also do not necessarily reflect the true strength of the small schools that came down for NXR-SW. Some of the teams shown below were running without key competitors from their rosters.
So, we belatedly recognize Albuquerque Academy as the 2014 small-school boys champions for the Southwest region! Results were pulled from both championship and open races to create the team scoring shown below. Five of the teams (Albuquerque Academy, The Classial Academy, Alamosa, Lamar, and Battle Mountain) competed in the championship race; the remainder competed in the open races (with the exception of occasional individuals who ran in the championship boys race).
