Once Kayla Carter took over the lead at Thursday's 2A Region 3 event, there was no bringing her back. Photos by Tim Hilt.

The early morning rains had dried off of the grass by the time the 2A girls were ready to race. Large puddles remained in areas and the back straight of grass along the fence at the Elmwood Golf Course in Pueblo had become more of a swamp after the two races that preceded the first 2A race of the day.

Makayla Garcia of Sargent took the lead early, holding off Rocky Ford's Taylor Berg and Kayla Carter of Custer County for a mile before yielding to both. Carter would take over in the muddy grass with Berg in tow.

The two established a small gap going onto the pavement with Berg's teammates Jacklynn Snyder and Jaquelin Alvey and Sargent's Maria Montes still moving at a strong pace behind them.
