Mason Finley Named Gatorade Boys Track AOY for Colorado

Wherever Mason Finley went this spring, records fell. It isn't easy to stand up to a 6-8, 320-pound giant of a young man.

The state discus record which had stood for 30 years fell in Finley's first meet of the season on a bitter, windy day in Gypsum. Finley's best discus mark of the season came in Bayfield at the regional meet. It now stands as the state all-classification record.

Although Finley flirted with the state all-classification shot put record all season long, that record remains intact. Instead, Finley must "settle" for a long series of meet records, including the 3A state meet record. His best mark of the CHSAA-sanctioned season, 65-1.75, came at the Tri-Peaks league meet (pictured, left).

Pending results of this weekend's Nike Outdoor Nationals and USATF Junior Nationals, Finley looks to finish the 2008 high school track season ranked #1 in the nation in the discus and #9 in the nation in the shot put. Those rankings, however, could change this weekend.

In addition to throwing the shot put and discus for Buena Vista HS, Finley played football for the Demons this fall. Finley is a member of the National Honor Society and will be the senior class secretary for the upcoming school year.
