The first day of results from Omaha are in, and it looks like a pretty decent day for the athletes from Colorado Springs and Douglas County.
In the young women's 2000 meter steeplechase, Doherty's Lynnea Sjoerdsma finished an impressive fifth in 7:25.35. Sjoerdsma will be a senior this fall at Doherty HS.
Over on the young men's side, the winner of the 2000 steeple was Michael Williams, a 2007 Colorado Springs Christian School graduate. Williams, now in the Baylor University program, finished in 5:57.63--the only contestant to finish under 6:00 (Just one question, Mike, does Coach Harbour know about this??). Finishing in seventh place in 6:19.76 was Garrett Wilson of Highlands Ranch High School.
Most noteworthy of all, however, was Eleanor Fulton's national age group record-setting triumph in the intermediate girls 2000 steeple, winning in 6:56.97. Close behind Fulton were Dominique Gerard in third (7:15.88) and Kristen Kientz, incoming freshman at Highlands Ranch High School, in fourth (7:17.57). Did I hear someone saying something about Colorado becoming the capitol of female steeplechasing?
Congratulations on the solid-first day performances and for representing Colorado well.
