Manitou Springs Boys Pick Their Places
Always give Manitou Springs their due. The Mustangs haven't won a state track and field title in a long time, but they do always seem to produce a nice set of high-end events each year.
This year is shaping up as more of the same.
The Manitou boys picked their places on Saturday in familiar spots. Last year's 3A runner-up in the 400, Jared Keul openend his 2017 campaign at 400 meters with a 50.84. Keul had the appearance of running on fumes down the finish straight, but the big motor is still there. Finishing endurance is something that will come along with time.
Meanwhile, Bryce Coop went directly to #2 in the 3A Boys long jump with a winning leap of 21-6 (0.0).
Signaling that Manitou will also be occupying their familiar presence in the 100 meter dash, Jayden Omi posted a fourth-place finish in 11.41 (-1.3). That gives Omi the #4 ranking in 3A Boys for the season to date, with promise of more to come.
Once again, it seems the Mustangs lack the depth to make a serious run at a state title, but they'll definitely be creating problems for folks needing top-end kind of points to boost their own efforts along the way.
