Where Do Things Stand Now? 1A Girls

Annie Weaver is part of a deep well of Heritage Christian Academy talent.

As usual, we'll begin with some general caveats:

  • The team scoring below is 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1, not the 10-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 used at the Colorado state meet. So, it's close as virtual meet scoring goes, but not precise.
  • Every team in any sort of contention at all has decisions to make regarding event selection. Most frequently this decision bears on what events athletes who figure as relay possibilities will be doing at State. So, in some cases, the virtual meet points for a team might exceed what they can actually do at State because of event limitations.
  • I don't pretend to be able to provide current information about any injury situations with these virtual meets.
  • Although most athletes are "out in the open" by now, there are probably a few athletes tucked away somewhere who don't show in the analysis below, or barely show, but who will nevertheless play pivotal roles at State. That's all part of the fun of it all.

Some more particular caveats apply to 1A. Specifically, this virtual meet team scoring has an advantage where relays are concerned because there are no prelims and finals for 1A relays. So, teams that make it to State score at State (with the lone exception of the 4x800 meter relay). On the other hand, 1A tends to have the highest proportion of athletes who have to make event decisions to get down to four events. 1A track teams aren't large, and so athletes get called on to do a lot of things. But they can only do four things at State.

So, here is what the virtual meet team scoring of the rankings looks like right now. Following the rankings, we'll discuss the teams a little.

2017 co HS F Outdoor Track Team Scores

Calculated as of April 26, 2017

These rankings were calculated by scoring the rankings as a meet. We took the individual rankings and relay rankings and scored them as a normal meet: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1.

Once again, we see Heritage Christian Academy as the team with the best depth. And, it's very difficult to beat "best depth" at the 1A level. HCA can load relays in a way other teams are going to struggle to be able to load them. That, and HCA has the individual talent to put a lot of points on the board as well.

Springfield is the only team that comes close right now. The Longhorns, too, have a lot of different possibilities for relays, plus some excellent point scoring potential in individual events as well.

Neither team figures to score many points by way of 10s, but both can nickel and dime you to death while still loading at least three of their relays in significant ways.

Shining Mountain, Caliche, and DeBeque all have some serious points of strength but will struggle to match anything close to the numbers Heritage Christian Academy and Springfield will bring to State. That makes it very difficult to close the gap.
