The standings are compiled through all fall sports and spirit competitions. Check to see where your school stands!
We began the Colorado Track XC Cup, modeled after the NCAA Directors' Cup, last summer. It is simply a fun little scoring system that combines results from all CHSAA-sanctioned sports and calculates a school champion in each of the five classifications used (in all sports except football). A first place in any CHSAA-sanctioned sport is worth 15 points, second place 13 points, and so on down to 8th place which earns one point. In sports where eight places are not ranked, semi-finalists earn 10 points, while quarter-finalists earn four points.
There are two tiers of sports used in determining the rankings, what I can "core" and "fringe" sports. To qualify as a core sport, a sport must be contested in at least three separate classifications. A school is only allowed scores from two fringe sports to count toward its combined total for the school year. Fringe sports include field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, tennis, swimming, and gymnastics. The distinction is made to help to even the playing field between schools with respect to greater and lesser affluence (schools that can afford more sports programs would otherwise be at an enormous advantage) and with respect to the fact that many of the programs fielded by schools in the fringe sports are, in fact, cooperative programs.
Also, schools may only count two finishes within the three spirit categories toward their total for the school year. This particular restriction did not impact any schools this year.
In 1A, Otis currently holds the lead on the basis of being a semi-finalist in 6-man football and the state runner-up in volleyball. Fleming and Dove Creek are both only four points behind.
In 2A, Limon's spirit results catapulted them into a fairly commanding lead, with cross country powers Rocky Ford and Nederland holding down second and third places, respectively.
In 3A, The Classical Academy currently holds a narrow lead over Kent Denver. TCA's strength lies in two cross country titles whereas Kent Denver's position is held by virture of state championships in boys tennis and golf, plus a runner-up finish in field hockey.
In 4A, Wheat Ridge is a bit of a surprise leader with traditional powers Mullen and Cheyenne Mountain nipping closely at their heels. Wheat Ridge leads on the strength of state titles in football and softball, plus a runner-up finish in boys cross country.
In 5A, it will surprise nobody to learn that Cherry Creek holds down a rather substantial lead, having won state titles in boys cross country and tennis and having two more state runner-up finishes. Regis Jesuit (counting the girls' finishes in 4A) is a distant second. Regis has no state titles to date, but does have three runner-up finishes already.
Champions from the 2007-08 school year were Eads in 1A, Limon in 2A, Faith Christian in 3A, Broomfield in 4A, and Cherry Creek in 5A. The article for the 2007-08 school year is linked here.
A link to the complete standings for this school year appears below. They are available as an Excel 2007 spreadsheet file. I tried making them available as a viewable page on this site, but the formatting was just strange. I will update the file as championships in winter sports are decided.
