4A Girls XC By Rankings

The rankings are a big fan of the girls from Battle Mountain.

In this article, we'll look at 4A Girls cross country this fall three different ways: 1) by marks of returning runners from last fall, 2) by 1600 times from this spring, and 3) by 3200 times from this spring.

Each of these three methods has advantages and disadvantages.

Using returning marks from last fall, we're using cross country times to project cross country times. There's a lot of merit to doing it that way. But, you get some out-of-state marks when you do that and there's not really any control for easier and more difficult courses.

Using 1600 times from this spring, you control for course variability and you pick up most--but not quite all--of the returning cross country runners. There still are a few problems with out-of-state marks, but less so than with cross country marks where half the state heads off to Arizona in November.

Using 3200 times from this spring, you get closer to the actual cross country distance than you do with 1600 times, but you eliminate more potential cross country runners from the analysis. Not everyone, and especially not every girl, runs the 3200 in the spring.

So I present all three analyses for you to help fill out the picture. We'll go short on commentary on the articles in this series because the numbers should stand up and speak for themselves, for the most part.

Below, you will find the top 15 teams in the state by each means of ranking. It's up to you to decide what it all means for this fall. And, remember, none of this takes into account incoming freshmen...

If you were paying attention last fall, it will not shock you in the least to see Battle Mountain, Air Academy, and Durango heading up this analysis. Battle Mountain and Air Academy were established solid teams, and Durango became a very solid team over the course of the season.
