Cruz Culpepper ran 4:11 at the Texas Relays for the No. 4 time in the country, and No. 1 among sophomores.
This past weekend Culpepper went down to Texas - his father's home-state - for the Texas Relays, and made the most of his trip to sea-level. Culpepper ran 4:11.54 to finish second by two-tenths of a second in the 1,600.
Adding to the impressive feat is how he ran it - with a negative split. Culpepper went 64-64-63-58.
The time is currently No. 4 in the country, and No. 2 for Colorado behind James Lee's 4:10.66 from last week. Additionally, it's the No. 1 time by a sophomore by five seconds.
It appears inevitable that the 1,600 at state - and the 800 - will be a massive showdown between Lee and Culpepper. While Lee has an undefeated record against Culpepper this season, the sophomore appears up for the challenge.
Anyone familiar with his parents are likely already making comparisons between father and son. Alan Culpepper enjoyed highly successful career, and his mother, Shayne Culpepper, was also insanely fast and had a lot of success.
One frightening fact with young Culpepper's 4:11 is that it surpasses his father's junior-year PR of 4:12.
Is anyone else ready for state?
