Records Fall At Lyons Invite

Mary Gillett took third in the long jump.

The girls side of the meet is where the most records fell. Between the dominating performances of Evans, Manson, and Gillett, it was bound to happen.

While Evans was rewriting a few records, so was Gillett. The Niwot senior went to work in the 400, blitzing a field that included Madison Mooney, who stepped down from her signature event. Gillett ran a new meet record of 56.60, which is No. 3 in all-classifications, and No. 1 in 4A. Mooney's 58.07 was second, and No. 5 in all-classifications.

Another big performance came out of Lizzie Waters, who took the 300 hurdles in 45.32, missing the meet record by two-tenths of second, and moving to No. 4 in all-classifications.

The distance events saw some big performances as well. Anna Shults and Tiana Bradfield jumped into the Top-10 state rankings in the 800, Shults won the event in 2:17.66, while Bradfield was a second behind in 2:18.64. Quinn McConnell made no contest of the 1,600, running wire-to-wire to win in 5:07.

And the fireworks didn't end there, as relay meet records were in danger all over the place.

Niwot dominated the 4x400 in 4:05 in a new meet record, but came agonizingly close in the 4x200, where they won in 1:43.55 - just behind the 1:43.51 record.

Vista Ridge experience similar agony, winning the 4x100 in 50.66, but missing the meet record of 50.43.

Meanwhile, Broomfield slashed the previous meet record in the 4x800 by 17 seconds. Broomfield ran a state-leading 9:30.

In the field, Taylor James replaced the old meet record with her name in the high jump. James went 5-3.5 to win the event.

Manson, competing in a variety of events, like Gillett, won the pole vault in 12-2.

Perhaps one of the biggest performances to come out of the meet besides Evans came from Logan DeRock, who made huge gains in the discus. DeRock put her stamp on the meet record book with a toss of 124-06. The mark is No. 4 in the state.

Niwot topped the team scores, with a dominating 117 points. Behind them was Lutheran with 93 points, and The Classical Academy with 69.
