2018 Les Schwab R2J Races Ahead Of The Weather

5A Loveland managed to hold onto the meet title at their home affair, but it took some doing to hold off challenges from 3A powers Lutheran, The Classical Academy, and Berthoud, each of whom had their moments on the day.

Adam Stark took a nearly three-second win in the 400, but the wind probably kept him from dipping under 50 seconds in the event. Zac Witman took 4:33 to win the 1600, then doubled back later in the day for a second place in the 800. Loveland's 4x200 edged out cross-district rival Berthoud for the title in that event. Zach Weinmaster stayed just-barely wind legal to win the long jump at 21-8.5 and the triple jump at 42.10.

That was just enough to ensure a Loveland team title.

Lutheran, running a bit short-handed at this meet, collected event titles from Ryan Goldhammer in the high jump (6-5), Nate Hanson in the 110 hurdles (15.36, -1.4), and Luke Arkell in the 100 (11.23) and 200 (22.89), both wind legal.

Hanson's bid for a sweep of the hurdle titles was turned aside by Mountain View freshman Tanner Kufeld (does that surname ring any bells for anyone?) with a 41.75.

The Classical Academy found paydirt with a winning 4x800 of 8:07.81, moving the Titans to #3 in the all-class rankings for the event. The Titans later tallied another relay win with a 44.48 in the 4x100. Ryan Moen added the line individual event title for the Titans with a 9:49 in the 3200.

Roosevelt scored an impressive 1-2 in the shot put with James Heater and Mikey DeRock both eclipsing 51 feet. Isaac Orozco made a serious bid for a sub-2 800, but ended up with the win in the event instead.

For its part, Berthoud landed the #1 3A 4x400 time on the season with a 3:32.11. The Berthoud relays were on fire, just missing a win in the 4x200 and moving up several places in the 3A 4x800 rankings on the day.
