Note: There are (still) potentially misspelled names, missing times and  first names, and other corrections to be made throughout. Please send notice of any corrections to be made to me at versawa@msn.com.

Later Note: I've done some more scanning of old newspaper microfilms and have added a number of missing, times, places, and scores. Also, where appropriate, I've added a few notes about the races that I found to be of interest.

1977 - Meet held at Pueblo City Park

Notes: The first year of three mile races. Wheat Ridge broke up some recent domination by teams from the South-Central League (which, at the time, included teams from Colorado Springs) by winning the meet.

Interestingly, the state meet results in the Colorado Springs Sun newspaper were listed under "Track."

1978 - Meet held at Pueblo City Park

Notes: This was the first year of girls cross country in Colorado. Judging by the coverage in the articles in the two Colorado Springs newspapers, people weren't paying a great deal of attention to girls cross country at the time.

The leader of the 3A girls race, Dana Derichsweiler of Pueblo East, "overheated" and collapsed 20 yards from the finish line. Derichsweiler eventually crawled across the finish line and finished 10th.

Former Wasson and current Coronado head coach Doug Hugill was part of a Wasson team that was profoundly disappointed to finish second in 3A. Hugill finished 25th among the individuals.

1979 - Meet held at Pueblo City Park

Notes: According to the Denver Post, Mike Vanatta became the first Colorado high school athlete to break 15:00 for three miles at this race. Vanatta's performance was accompanied for about a mile by a "mystery runner" clad in yellow who sprinted by Vanatta before the half-mile mark and remarked as he went, "You run too fast, slow down." The mystery runner stopped at the mile after leading runners through at about 4:35. As Vanatta went by, the mystery runner asked, "How'd you like that mile?"

Legendary Northglenn coach Pat Amato was at the helm for the Northglenn girls' state championship. His entire team would be back next year, but would be a long way out of first in 1980.

At least three of the 1979 placers should still strike a chord of recognition among more recent fans of Colorado high school cross country

1980 - Meet held at Pueblo City Park

1980 Notes: Eric Vaughn (who also shows up in the results the next few years) is no relation to Brent Vaughn.

Lake County and Centauri definitely dominated the A-2A scoring, with Lake County taking places 2-7-9-12 and Centauri taking 10-11-13-15. These were the two small school powers in the early years of 5K cross country. Not much different in the girls with Lake County placing 3-4-6-7 and Centauri placing 5-8-10-13.

1981 - Meet held in Englewood (muddy conditions)

1981 Notes: The Denver Post reports that this was the first year of 5K cross country and that the previous four years were three-mile races. The 3A (Division I) race has been won by a Jefferson County school (either Green Mountain or Wheat Ridge) every year to date.

Dan Reese's hard-luck string continues as he is passed in the final 150 yards by Paul Kent of Boulder (who was playing tennis the previous fall) for the win.

One has to assume that Moffat County's Scott Ivy (10th place, 3A boys) is some relation to Brian Ivy who has been a solid jumper for Moffat County in 2009 and 2010.

On another relation note, the Martin Sowards shown placing for Centauri is the father of Lindsey Sowards who would be a standout distance runner for Alamosa a generation later and a brother to Clint Sowards, a standout for Centauri several years later.

3A Boys Team Scores - Green Mountain 68 (Coach: Dennis Shepherd), Boulder 101, Wheat Ridge 108, Smoky Hill 158, Poudre 186, Pueblo Central 207, Pueblo County 219, Gateway 220, Arvada 267, Fort Collins 292, Pueblo Centennial 295, Moffat County 315, Durango 318, Greeley Central 335, Northglenn 378, Doherty 406, Pueblo South 451, Ranum 453, Regis 468, Canon City 489, Denver East 514

1982 - Meet held at Kent Denver

1982 Notes: I am guessing that Nicole Boes would be the daughter of Oscar Boes (pronounced Bays), former cross country coach at Colorado School of Mines. Also, the name of Greg Castro should be familiar to many fans of Colorado distance running.

Jefferson County continues its stranglehold on the 3A Boys title, making it six years in a row with Green Mountain's triumph.

The A-2A girls race had a little bit of controversy this year. Lori Smith of Woodland Park was leading the race at three miles and failed to make the turn to the finish line. Rene Frazee caught up while Smith got back on course and outleaned Smith at the finish line. From the article from the Gazette Telegraph:

"I feel sick. I'm angry. I read it wrong. I took a wrong turn," said Smith. "I thought the arrow (at the three-mile marker) pointed straight across the grass."

"It makes me mad," said Woodland Park coach Dennis Bates. "She ran down the hill and then back up. She's not a sprinter. She had it in her hip pocket with a 40-yard lead in the back stretch."

Note that Smoky Hill runner Lori Fitzgerald (who finished second in 3A girls and second again in 1984) is the person for whom this year's (2010) pre-state meet is named. She would go on to a scholarship at UTEP only to be killed in a tragic accident there. She was three weeks into the UTEP program when she was struck by a farm truck on a warm-up run for a team time trial.

Carl Burgess (Widefield) would go on to coach cross country at Mesa Ridge in later years.

1984 - Meet held at Jeffco Stadium

1984 Notes: The state meet was delayed by one week due to snow on the originally scheduled date. This year would mark the beginning of Ray Harvey's fabulous high school career.

In this same year, Fairview senior Lize Brittin established the course record for the Liberty Bell Invitational at 17:34. This record would stand until 2010 when Eleanor Fulton took about a half second off of Brittin's mark.

A nice year for the San Luis Valley in A-2A boys, claiming five of the top 10 places.

1985 - Meet held at Pueblo City Park

1985 Notes: Jon Luff and Jon Hume battled neck-and-neck at the finish of this race, with Luff defeating the previous year's champion with a lunge at the finish line. Apparently, Luff and Hume had not met in a race since the 1984 state meet.

Jennifer Ward's winning 3A time of 18:13 was reported by the Denver Post as a personal best by a whopping 1:25! Ward passed three runners in the last 200 yards to claim the win. Montrose, however, claimed the 3A girls team title and that despite having their #1 runner in the hosptial.

This was also the seventh, and final, consecutive state championship for the Lake County girls, a record that still stands today. Incidentally, this was likely the most dominating of all their state championships. Paradoxically, there was only one senior on this dominant 1985 team that was unable to extend the streak into 1986.

And a note on Ray Harvey of Ouray... Harvey's absence from the 1985 state meet results is explained by the fact that he missed the regional meet that year owing to having a wrong schedule.

1986 - Meet held at Pueblo City Park

1986 Notes: This year marks the beginning of the remarkable high school career of Cruz Zarco of Sargent. It was also a very good year for the Nelson siblings of Florence, Chris and Calley. Interestingly, the Lake County boys have no team score for this year.

Several noteworthy tidbits here, including the sweep of individual titles by Poudre runners Nathan Wright and Shannon Busch. The two, incidentally, swept the titles at every meet they ran this year. Siblings Chris and Calley Nelson of Florence just missed pulling off a sweep in the A-2A race.

Garry Howard was the Platte Canyon coach who put an end to the string of consecutive state titles by the Lake County girls. That one is of special interest to me in that Coach Howard was one of the nicest, and most helpful, coaches to me in my early years of coaching. It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. Lake County's effort was thwarted by having only two runners in the top 20. "I thought we were ready, but we weren't. Platte Canyon just wanted it more than our girls did. It was their day." remarked legendary Lake County coach Frank Mencin.

1987 - Meet held at Pueblo City Park:

1987 Notes: Chris and Calley Nelson of Florence repeat their finishes from 1986. In fact, the top three girls in A-2A remain the same for this year from last.

1987 marks the beginning of the spectacular high school career of Sarah Schwald (one, however, that would not end in Colorado). Sarah Schwald's state title was a first for brand-new Liberty High School. Over the next 20 years, however, Liberty would prove to be a very strong cross country program under coach Gary Weston.

Apparently, there was once such a thing as the "Arapahoe Invitational Jinx." Alex Accetta of Durango became the 14th consecutive winner of the Arapahoe Invitational who was unable to claim the state title.

3A Boys Team Scores - Rangeview 94 (Coach: T. J. 1988 - Meet held at Pueblo City Park

1988 Notes: Try to imagine the 3A girls race between Sarah Schwald and Melody Fairchild. I'm guessing that is the last race she ran in Colorado that Melody Fairchild didn't win. Sarah Schwald set a course and state meet record in this race, but Fairchild would smash it in 1989.

1989 - Meet held at Pueblo City Park

1989 Notes: Brett Larsen would be one of the people instrumental in bringing the 2008 State Cross Country Championship to Fort Collins. Very impressive that Fort Collins had three boys under 16:00 in 1989.

Even though she was (just barely) outside of the top 10 in 3A girls, I included Elva Martinez (later Elva Dryer) in the results due to her later significance to distance running in Colorado and the United States.

1990 - Meet held at Viele Lake (Boulder), a much tougher course than Pueblo City Park

1990 Notes: The Jay Johnson in the 5A boys race is not the Jay Johnson of Running With the Buffaloes fame. The Jay Johnson you were likely thinking of ran for Douglas County HS.

I wonder if anyone can tell me what scoring format was used by the A-4A classification these two years. Judging by the team scores for Lake County and Steamboat Springs, it looks as if it must have been run 5/score 4. But, there were some fairly large schools in that classification to be running under that format.

Speaking of scores, Grand Junction's girls put up a very nice team score in 1990.

1991 - Meet held at Pueblo City Park

1991 Notes: The top 10 individuals among A-4A boys would have a significant impact on the future of cross country in Colorado. Quite a special group, actually. And, speaking of that group, is Jeremy Kula any relation to Brian Kula?

The 5A girls race has an interesting sidebar to the story. Grand Junction would have won the overall title but for a disqualification of their second runner. Kristi Widows of Grand Junction finished the race in fifth, but was disqualified for her coach running alongside her. Apparently, the coach had been warned about running alongside twice previously and the meet officials lowered the boom on the third infraction. Kind of a tough break for Kristi Widows.

The 6A boys race is especially notable for the 1-2 finish by two runners from Doherty, Adam Goucher and Eric Mack. These two would go on to spectacular college careers and two of the best finishes ever by Colorado athletes at NCAA Division I cross country nationals. Imagine having two with that kind of talent on the same team! From the tone of the Denver Post article on the meet, this appears to be the first time that then-sophomore Adam Goucher beat his teammate.

1992 - Meet held at Pueblo City Park

1992 Notes: What is striking about this year's results is how low the scores were, meaning there were few teams in the field. It looks as if Colorado wasn't quite ready for four classifications. That may have something to do with why this arrangement only lasted two years.

Imagine Doherty's situation in 1992--placing three runners in the top eight and not winning the team title. That went to Cherry Creek, who placed three in the top 14.

A nice little sweep of all four 4A titles by Moffat County.

Chris Cherry of Rampart, #9 finisher among 5A girls, would later coach at Rampart and now coaches at Discovery Canyon.

1994 Results - Meet held at Viele Lake, Boulder

1994 Notes: Although Bear Creek had only one boy in the top ten for 5A and Fort Collins three, Bear Creek still managed to win the overall title, adding places 11, 13, 17, and 19. The places do not add to 51 due to runners from non-scoring teams being removed from the scoring. The scoring procedure for Colorado state meets has changed since that time so that runners from non-scoring teams are not removed.

1996 - Meet held at Pueblo City Park

1996 Notes: Two medalists from this year apparently medaled for other high schools earlier in their carees, Meg Schissler of Cherry Creek (ran previously for Moffat County) and Chris Valenti of Littleton (appears to have run previously for Sheridan).

This would be the year of Lake County's most recent state championship. As of this writing, they have not been back on top since.

1997 - Meet held at Pueblo City Park

1997 Notes: Emily Plummer becomes the second Colorado individual to win four Colorado state cross country championships. Plummer apparently had a thing for "lucky" apparel items. The Denver Post article from this year records her as wearing "lucky oacks, jewelry, and paint for the occasion." What, no jewelry rule?! The Denver Post article from the 1996 meet records Plummer as wearing lucky mittens that her mother made for her prior to the race.

Loveland's Paul McNeely repeated as 5A state champion this year with electric blue hair. The preceding year he won with red, yellow, and black braids in his hair.

This would be the year of the great October blizzard in Pueblo (see article here) that arrived the afternoon before the meet was scheduled. The meet was therefore postponed to the first Saturday in November.
