Dylan Schubert Sweeps The 4A Distance Events
Dylan Schubert isn't exactly a new face. He's a two-time Nike Cross Nationals qualifier, and the defending 3,200 state champ.
A year ago he captured his first state title with a runaway victory in the 3,200, running 9:24. He backed that up with a third-place finish in the 1,600 two days later, running 4:20.
He owns PRs of 4:20 in the 1,600 (in Colorado), 9:12 3,200 from Arcadia (lower elevations), and a 14:58 cross country 5k.
Last fall Schubert finished 14th at NXN, and was Colorado's third runner to cross the line - and the top 4A runner.
He is the top-returner in the 1,600 and 3,200, though he's likely to have some credible challengers in sophomore Erik Le Roux, junior Grahm Tuohy-Gaydos, and senior Luke Tichi.
Le Roux, Tuohy-Gaydos, and Tichi made big strides over the past year.
Le Roux's Colorado PRs are similar to Schuberts, as he's run 4:21 in the 1,600, 9:28 in the 3,200, and 15:10 in the 5k.
Tuohy-Gaydos had a breakthrough sophomore track season, running 4:29 in the 1,600 and 9:39 in the 3,200 (both in Colorado), though it was his cross country season that really elevated him into the conversation.
Tuohy-Gaydos won a staggering nine races last fall, ran 15:11 at lower elevations, and pushed the pace at the state cross country championships. The Green Mountain junior went on to finish fifth behind Schubert, Le Roux, and Tichi.
Likewise, Tichi clearly made a leap last fall, and during the 2020 indoor season.
A year ago Tichi finished eighth in the 1,600 at State, and owned PRs 1:58 in the 800 of 4:21 in the 1,600, and 10:22 in the 3,200. He had a big cross country season where he went on to finish fourth at the state cross country championships, and drop a PR of 15:22 at Desert Twilight.
In head-to-head matchups, Schubert has a clean slate of victories over Le Roux, Tuohy-Gaydos, and Tichi over the past year.
