Colorado 5A State Recap: Stars Shine Bright At JeffCo

No one athlete dominated the sprints, though there was one consistent runner-up - and we'll come back to that.

Cherokee Trail's Symone Adams took a tight victory in the 100, running 12.18 for the state title. Monarch's Julia Pattison was a close runner-up, running 12.22, while Rock Canyon's Sophia McHenry was third in 12.26.

In the 200 Haley Esser won the state title, running 24.73, while Pattison was once again the runner-up in 24.86, which was just ahead of Adams' 24.87.

Onwards up in distance moved into Cherry Creek territory, as Kinsey Christianson won the 400 state title in 55.43. Pattison was second in 56.28, while Cherry Creek's Kel McDavid was third in 56.52.

Returning to the first sentence in this recap, Pattison had perhaps the best meet as a whole among the sprinters - she tallied three runner-up finishes.

In the 800 everything nearly went according to script. And I write nearly, because Cherry Creek did go 1-2, but it was Christianson with the state title, running a state-leading, personal best of 2:07.25. Riley Stewart took second in 2:10.06, while Broomfield's Maelynn Higgins ran 2:12.77 to finish third.

In Sunday's 1,600 Stewart capped her incredible high school career in style - she torched a 4:48.62 in her final victory "lap" at Jeffco Stadium for her eighth state title. Behind her, it was déjà vu, as Arapahoe's Emily Lamontagne, Valor Christian's Keeghan Edwards, and Pomona's Emma Stutzman kicked in for that runner-up spot, and the result was the same as it was three days earlier - Lamontagne took second in 4:53.03, Edwards was third in 4:53.07, and Stutzman was fourth in 4:55.10.

Three days earlier - before snow delayed any action, the quartet of Stewart, Lamontagne, Edwards, and Stutzman ran 1-2-3-4 in the 3,200.

Stewart got things off to a hot start in the 3,200 Thursday morning. The Cherry Creek senior picked up state title No. 7 after cruising through the opening mile with the pack. The 3,200 state record holder made 10:34 look easy. Behind her, Arapahoe's Emily Lamontagne, Valor's Keeghan Edwards, and Pomona's Emma Stutzman battled it out for the runner-up spot. Heading into the bell lap Lamontagne and Edwards had separated from Stutzman. The two battled all the way down to the line with the Arapahoe junior finishing second in 10:42.82 to Edwards' 10:42.84. Stutzman finished five-seconds back in 10:47.

In the hurdles it was all Regis Jesuit's Fabiola Belibi

Belibi dominated the 100H in 14.29, while Grandview's Gabriella Cunningham was second in 14.64.

Several hours later Belibi returned to make it a sweep of the hurdles, running 43.27 to win the 400H. Amelia Hubbell was second in 43.89, while Cunningham was third in 44.57.

In the relays Chatfield turned heads multiple times. They won the 4x100 in 47.89, and the Sprint Medley Relay in 1:46.40 to Valor's 1:47.69. Eaglecrest won the 4x200 in a jaw-dropping 1:40.66, while Cherry Creek ran away with the 4x400 in 3:51.

In the 4x800 pre-race favorites and current state record holders - Cherry Creek - made this a one-team race. They ran away with a 9:12 clocking. Denver East took second in 9:22.02, while Arapahoe was a stride back in 9:22.9.

Fort Collins senior Brooke Naughton saved her best for last, as she tallied three state titles over the weekend.

She added a few inches to her PR to win the long jump with a 18-9.75 leap. Fabiola Belibi took the runner-up spot with a leap of 18-2.25.

Naughton won the high jump in 5-6, while Grandview's Dallis Robinson was second in 5-4, and she won the triple jump with a leap of 37-9.5, which tied Cherokee Trail's Kaeli Powe.

In the discus Kajsa Borrman was in a class of her own. The Loveland senior tossed 146-1 to win the event by nearly 20-feet. Laura Davis took second with a toss of 127-1.

Davis didn't leave Lakewood without gold, however, she won the shot put with a toss of 39-3.75, which was just ahead of Savannah Jorgens' 39-3.

Meanwhile the pole vault saw quite a few soar to new PRs.

Broomfield sophomore Lilly Nichols successfully defended her state title, clearing 12-9 for the win. Fairview's Olivia Kosanovich had a monster day of her own, adding over a half-a-foot to her PR. Kosanovich cleared 12-6 to finish second. Likewise, Legacy freshman Victoria Spitzley soared over 12-feet for the first time, clearing 12-3 to finish third.

Cherry Creek ran away with the overall team title, tallying 112 points. Cherokee Trail and Fort Collins took the runner-up position down to the 4x4. Cherokee Trail finishing second with 70.5 points, and Fort Collins third with 68 points.
