Colorado 1A State Recap: Heritage Christian Sweeps

The 100 was an insanely close race.

And it was Idalia freshman Krista Wieser who stole the show, winning the event by two-hundredths-of-a-second over Taysa Conger. Wieser ran 13.47, while Conger was second in 13.49, and Zoey Vandenbark was third in 13.50.

Doubling up in distance Kally Kirkwood made sure not to let the 200 be as close. The Fleming junior won the state title in 26.96. Wieser took second in 27.63.

And that wasn't Kikrwood's only state title over the weekend. She always won the 400, running 59.24. Conger was second just over the minute marker in 1:01.02.

In the 800 McKenzie Bartholomew kicked late to claim the state title, running 2:28.36.

Meanwhile the 1,600 went into the final lap before the race was decided. And when it was, it was Paola Vidales with the state title, running 5:38.97. Cecilia Richardson was second in 5:43.97, and Ainsley Stanton  was third in 5:46.68

In the 3,200 Simla's Richardson set a hot early pace, though Heritage Christian's Stanton came prepared.

The Heritage Christian sophomore surged hard over the final three laps and telescoped away to defend her 3,200 state title, running 12:48. Richardson held on for second in 13:00.

In the 100H it was Lisa Sutherland with the upset victory. The Nucla junior, who finished second in this event a year ago, came away with the state title on this day, running 16.24. Alivia Weathers took second a half-second back in 16.71.

Sutherland would be denied a sweep of the hurdles, however, as Shaylee Scheler stormed to victory in the 300H, running 47.32. Sutherland was a stride back in second in 47.94.

In the 4x100 Fleming dominated, running 52.53 for nearly a full-second victory. They duplicated the feat a day earlier, winning the 4x200 state title in 1:51.45 - a two-second victory.

Heritage Christian continued to tally up a load of points on Day 1, as their Sprint Medley Relay kicked late to win the event in 1:52.27 for a four-second victory.

Lone Star's Alivia Weathers captured state title No. 1 of her week in the pole vault, clearing 10-1 for a PR. Teammate Lamya Kuntz was second in 9-6.

Weathers also won the triple jump with a leap of 35-3.25, and she finished second in the long jump to Emily Mason, who leapt to 15-11.5. Weathers leapt to 15-4.

Maggie Haase was the lone high jumper over five-feet, clearing 5-0 for the state title.

In the discus Zadie Mackey capped her flawless season with her eighth-consecutive victory in the event. The Elbert sophomore won the state title with a 137-7 toss. Mackey also won the shot put with a toss of 35-08.50.

Heritage Christian dominated the team race, tallying 124 points. Merino was second with 77 points, while Idalia was third with 66.
