Monday Morning Recap: Colorado Brings The Heat

We're halfway through January - the coldest month of the year in Colorado, and all the while things are clearly steaming up indoors!

Colorado's best were spread across this country this past weekend (and some still are competing!) There were quite a few state-leading marks to come out of the weekend - and one nation-leading mark.

Here are the highlights of the highlights...

The big news coming out of the middle of January (and the Arkansas High School Invitational) was Mead's Tavon Underwood, who torched a nation-leading 47.79 in the preliminary heats of the 400. The time currently leads the country by a tenth-of-a-second.

Underwood also blazed a 21.87 in the 200 - both times are personal bests for the Mead senior, indoors and out.

A state over in Houston, Tex. at the Carl Lewis Invitational Cherokee Trail's Symone Adams sliced a few more tenths of a second off her indoor 200 PR, running 24.78 to finish second in the finals.

Back in Colorado there was plenty to talk about...

At the Colorado Mines HS Indoor Series #3 Windsor's Lindsey Hinson proved that she's nearly in outdoor-shape already. Hinson won the 300 in a state-leading, PR of 44.23.

Likewise, Taegan Olson has soared to new heights in 2023. The Roosevelt sophomore cleared 11-6 to win the pole vault for a new PR - that's a full six-inches above her 2022 outdoor best.

For the boys Chrisly Kelly-Cannon nearly took down his state-leading, season best in the 60, running four-hundredths of a second off in 6.93.

Likewise (Part II) Charlie Lafore was just inches off his state-leading shot put mark, tossing 56-11. Meanwhile Miller Jones made the long journey from Colorado's Western Slope more than worth it - the Grand Junction senior and 2022 state runner-up in the triple jump leapt to a state-leading 46-4.5.

There was some great pole vault action at Sunday's MLK Classic

The Classical Academy's Anna Willis cleared 12-7.5 claim to claim the event - that's her second-consecutive time over 12-5 this indoor season (out of two competitions.) Lilly Nichols opened her 2023 with a runner-up finish here, clearing 12-1.75.

In the triple jump Kaeli Powe leapt to a state-leading 37-1.25 to claim the event over Justice Ephrim's 36-5.75.
