Week in Review: Week of March 15 -20

Last Week in Review (an intentionally light-hearted look at the last week of track and field action in Colorado)

For the most part, this week fell victim to a) spring break and b) meets that just might have been canceled too soon. Saturday wasn't exactly balmy along the Front Range, but the weather forecasters blew the forecast for Saturday. To quote a saying current during my childhood, "That's the way the cookie crumbles." Never really understood what that saying meant, but it seems appropriate at the moment....

This week will be one more week of low meet activity, then things will pick up in a serious way as the calendar turns over into April.

Delta Invitational

This is what happens when you're the only show in town (or, in this case, on the entire western slope). 31 teams and a meet that lasted until after 8 PM. Delta isn't exactly the frost belt of western Colorado, but I'm still guessing it was pretty chilly by the time the shut off the lights on the track. It was definitely a good chance to see who has what among western Colorado track and field programs from 2A all the way to 5A. My take? Cedaredge once again has a heaping helping of talent for a school as small as they are. Ben Brewer, Jheri Gates, Sierra Williams... Looks like another solid team for the Bruins. Dolores appears to be a threat worth taking seriously in 2A.

Conspicuously missing from this meet were Moffat County, Bayfield, and Pagosa Springs. We'll have to wait a little longer to see what these teams have going.

El Paso County Small Schools Meet #2

Most Tuesday evening, non-qualifying meets don't send in results. This one wouldn't have, either, except that my own school hosted this one and it was a good chance for me to test out the RaceTab track and field software a little. It's free and it worked very nicely for scoring our meet and disseminating the results. And, it's nice to see a few kids get recognition for performances who wouldn't otherwise have received any recognition. And, hey, we even got a school record out of the evening (Kevin Schwindt, long jump, 20-5)!

Five Star Championships

Horizon (girls) and Mountain Range (boys) claim bragging rights in the district championship for Adams School District 12, more or less the north end of Denver suburbia. Amanda Miller of Thornton had the performance of the evening with a nice 38-7 heave of the shot.

Jeffco 4A Qualifier

Why am I not surprised to see Wheat Ridge, D`Evelyn, and Evergreen piling up big points in this meet? Centaurus also picked up a nice bundle of points in the boys' team standings. Evergreen is loaded in girls' distance, but bigger tests will come later on when the take on the likes of Alamosa and Thompson Valley. For now, though, the crew of Warren, Skold, Haebe, and O`Brien is busy reestablishing the territory they staked out in cross country season.

Elizabeth (both boys and girls) has some very nice sprint relays going on early in the season.
