
It's always a little subjective picking a "top x stories," but these stories were big in 2011.
11. Walsh Boys, State Track - This was the first year of the 1A state track classification and Walsh, a tiny school of about 50 students in far southeast Colorado, made the most of it. Between Laken Alley, Landry Cogburn, and a 4x400 relay team that dominated the finals, the Eagles posted a number of 1A records that should weather the test of time well. Those records include Laken Alley, 11.32 (100 Meters), Landry Cogburn, 14.57 (110 Hurdles) and 38.73 (300 Hurdles), and the 3:29.68 in the 4x400. Walsh carried on a spirited rivalry with Springfield all season long and capped off that rivalry with a stirring conquest of the Longhorns at the state meet. Despite a massive effort in the relays, Springfield would end up second at the state meet.
