Competitors catching spikes and stumbling coming out of the blocks. Throwers having trouble keeping their spins inside the ring. High jumpers launching into too-flat trajectories. Distance runners recalling, distantly, their cross country fitness and going out too hard.
It looked a lot like the first meet of the season. Maybe because it was for most of these athletes. And early meets are there precisely for the purpose of helping athletes iron out issues of timing and technique. What we see at Jeffco Stadium in May comes by way of progression.
And for many athletes, a long period of progression began at Balch Field House on Saturday.
None of this is to suggest that there were no solid performances. There were several.
