Blazing At The Pomona Invitational

The theme of the meet seemed to be either runaway performances, or hotly contested battles, and the girl's 100 was the latter.

Michelle McDonald took down a star-studded final, winning the event in a CO 5A No. 1 of 12.11. Camille Peisner took second in 12.21, just ahead of Kaleah Ruff's 12.25.

Peisner didn't go home without gold, however. She won a blazing 200 that saw the top-two times in the state. The Valor Christian senior ran 24.39 to win the event over Kyairra Reigh, who finished second in 24.68.

Editor's Note: The event actually saw the top-three times in the state, if you include Taylor James' 24.90 from the prelims. Niwot's graduation was Saturday afternoon, however, so James did not run the final.

If you repeat the line from above (about Peisner not going home without gold), the same could said for Reigh - she dominated the 400, running a state-leading 55.77. Kylie Bahr took second in the event, running 58.45.

And on the topic of domination, Maelynn Higgins soloed the 800. The Broomfield sophomore gapped the field early and ran away with a 2:13.07 victory. Emma Stutzman took second in 2:19.87, which was just ahead of Brooke Wilson's 2:19.97.

While Higgins made no contest of the 800, the 1,600 was a race that went down to the line.

Taylor Whitfield led the first 1,500 meters of the race, but the final 100 belonged to Stella Vieth. The two battled down the final stretch, though it was Vieth who crossed the line first in 5:00.25. Whitfield was a stride back in 5:00.72.

Friday night Emma Stutzman shined, giving the host-school a big W. The Pomona sophomore ran away with the 3,200, running 10:51.74 - a 5A No. 1 timeCameron McConnell took second in 11:05.86, just ahead of Maggie McCleskey's 11:07.94.

Meanwhile, Kimora Northrup swept the hurdles in dominating fashion.

The Niwot sophomore blazed a 14.62 clocking to win the 100H by over a second, then she came back to drop an impressive 43.19 in the 300H - that's a 4A No. 1 by a second-and-a-half.

Editor's Note: Zeaniah Wedgeworth ran a stellar 14.69 in the 100H prelims, but did not race in the final.

Like the boys, the Niwot girls 4x800 squad went big. Big as in torching the previous the state record in the event by five-seconds. Niwot ran 8:55.86 for a US No. 1 - by nine-seconds.

In the high jump Brooke Naughton andLariel Henley both cleared 5-4, while Emma Chicco cleared 12-0 to win the pole vault.

Agur Dwol swept the horizontal jumps, winning the long jump in 17-8.5, and the triple jump in 39-11.

The discus was another hotly contested event.

Lindsey Osterfelt tossed a season-best of 132-10 to win the event over Amanda Opp, who finished second in 125-3. Meanwhile, Laura Davis won the shot put in 39-1.5, while Opp was once again second - this time with a toss of 38-9.75.

Valor Christian dominated the team competition, tallying 142 points. Fort Collins took second with 79, while Fossil Ridge tallied 71.5, which was just ahead of Niwot's 69.
