Helen Cross had an outstanding freshman year for Nederland. She now becomes one of the seasoned veterans.

Tired of watching Telluride, Lyons, and Heritage Christian Academy dominate 2A Girls cross country? Need a new 2A team to follow? Well, consider Nederland.

Not only does Nederland open the fall football season with the first female head school in Colorado history, but the cross country team could be making news this fall as well.

You might have noticed something brewing in track season with freshman Helen Cross and junior Sarah Davidson staking out permanent positions in the 2A distance rankings. When it came down to the state meet, Davidson and Cross went 8-11, respectively, in the 3200.

That's only two points at the state track meet, but it means a lot more in terms of cross country. Even more so when three of the girls in front of them graduated this spring.

We should also take a moment here to note that at the shorter distance of 1600 meters, Davidson and Cross went 4-5 at State.

But, while two is company, you still need a crowd, even in 2A cross country. Are there any possibilities for a third for Nederland this fall?

Anna Neher, who didn't run track this spring is one possibility to step into the role. Neher had a top time of 23:19 last fall. If Neher can knock 90 seconds off that time this fall, Nederland is conceivably in the hunt.

Meg Feeley is another possibility from last year's roster, but ran a minute or so behind Neher last fall.

Yet another possibility is sophomore-to-be Alex Sorokach. Sorokach logged a few 800s and a some relay legs this spring with times that suggest she's moved well ahead of her 25:19 cross country PR from last fall.

Ely Nitsch figures to come up from the middle school ranks after posting a PR 3000 meter time of 13:48 last fall (at Wiggins).

So, what does it all mean? It means Nederland is pretty tough at 1 and 2, but still searching for a clear and definite answer at #3. Possibilities are there, but none of the possibilities currently checks in as a sure thing.

There's a very good chance we'll know a lot more about the prospects for this team by mid-September. Stay tuned.
