Back in the day, before the 300 hurdles, and before people went gonzo crazy racing the 800, the 400 meters was widely regarded as the most brutal event in high school track and field. It's still brutal, it's just lost a couple of places on the totem pole. But, don't try to tell that to any of the people who are busy setting new 400 meter records. Here's what the lay of the landscape looks like this spring.

Okay, we have a favorite here. A rather prohibitive favorite, in fact. One wonders how Ally Watt's state final 400 last spring may have turned out with a little different pacing strategy. Faster than 53.78? Slower than 53.78? Hard to say! What isn't hard to say is that nobody is giving Watt much of a chance to do anything other than win the 5A 400 this spring.
